In modern times, Richard Russell (1750) began using sea water for medicinal purposes - for drinking and bathing - in Brighton. His promising results attracted the Court; and thanks to this, Brighton became a city instead of a fishing village.

In Spain, since the change of political regime in 1975, a political movement is growing (municipalistas.es), independent of the big parties, without ideology, and which coordinates small parties of all ideologies.
